Haigh Woodland Park

Haigh Woodland Park boasts the perfect mix of sumptuous grounds and impressive facilities. Perfect for a picnic, the site also hosts a range of food and drink options. There are miles of walking trails with incredible views. Haigh Woodland Park is also home to a range of activity centres, including a golf course, adventure play area and high ropes course.

Pennington Flash

Pennington Flash Local Nature Reserve is part of an impressive country park. The lake is home to a wide variety of wildlife making it one of the most interesting walks in the borough. You'll be surprised what you may spot along the way! For those who enjoy sport, a challenging nine hole pay and play golf course is located on site. Horse riding and angling is also permitted in designated areas, with sailing and windsurfing available at Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club.

Amberswood and Low Hall

Another area rich in wildlife, Amberswood and Low Hall have over 6km of beautiful woodland paths to explore. It's also an excellent site for some outdoor exercise - Wigan Harriers host trail races on the site and a permanent orienteering course has been developed.

This picturesque spot is a popular place for year-round fishing. There is also a small nature reserve which is home to over 100 species of bird and a wide variety of butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies.

A beautiful example of Victorian design, Mesnes park boasts manicured lawns, flower gardens, a bandstand that host music events throughout the year, as well as a stunning central pavilion featuring Frederick's ice cream parlour.

Leeds and Liverpool Canal

This historic canal route passes through Wigan Borough and provides a range of scenic walks, linking some of the major Greenheart sites in the region. There's also boating, wildlife-watching and all-round relaxation.

Wigan Pier

Combining natural beauty and urban industry, Wigan Pier is a great starting point to enjoy strolling between the Borough’s Flashes and other Greenheart sites. Wigan Pier is also the home to Kittywake Canal Cruises (external link), where you experience the beautiful Leeds and Liverpool canal on one their canal boats.
