Wigan Borough legends headline a summer of music

Posted: Monday 3rd June 2024

In July, over a five-night stretch at Robin Park Arena, a new chapter is going to be written into Wigan Borough’s musical history.

The venue – Wigan Warriors’ training ground, Robin Park Arena – will swap front row forwards for front row seats, extra-time for encores and flying wingers with headline singers.

It’s going to be a good one, so let’s find out which of Wigan Borough’s icons will be hitting the right notes this summer.

The Lathums

How beautiful life can be! Indie rock band, The Lathums will be headlining on the Friday with bangers and homegrown fans meaning it’s sure to be an electric atmosphere.

And what do they have to say about it? “This will be the gig of our lives. Nowhere does a welcome like the Wiganers, so for anyone who haven’t felt the love, come along and join us.

“The Lathums won’t let Wigan down, and Wigan won’t let you down!”

The Lottery Winners

Leigh band The Lottery Winners are excited for what they call an “historic” gig. The talented foursome are supporting Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on the Thursday night.

“There’s not really anything better than supporting your songwriting hero on your doorstep.”

Stanleys

Even down to their name, Stanleys (made up of four former Winstanley College students) have their roots well and truly laid in the borough. With music influenced by Northern Soul and 90s Britpop, Tom, Jake, Harry and Rob will knock the socks off you if you’re attending this gig.

“Growing up, I started listening to The Verve before I even realised they were from Wigan and then you think of it as like, ‘well, these are people like us.’

“It’s surreal to think of the Haigh Hall gig, I think we all know someone who was at that one.

“We’re seeing our name on the posters around, on bus stops and things around the town, it just feels really strong as a Wigan band to be alongside Richard Ashcroft.”

Richard Ashcroft

And finally, more than a quarter of a century since the Verve played their legendary gig at Haigh Hall, Richard Ashcroft will return to his hometown of Wigan.

“After 25 years, I’m back playing in my hometown.

“Looking forward to an amazing two nights in Wigan.”

Make a weekend of it!
